We "look old" because of wrinkles, frown lines, skin blotchiness, age-spots, loss of skin radiance, sagging skin (a big one), "feather" lips, under-eye puffiness, crow's feet and thinning lips.
On a biological level, skin-aging is caused by: free-radical damage, changes in fat content of skin, changes in skin collagen, dehydration, DNA changes, degradation of elastin. Plus disorders in the workings of enzymes that are responsible for a healthy balance between cell turnover and the degradation of damaged proteins which results in accumulated chronic skin damage and inflammaging.
Dehydration is caused by two factors: One is the damage to the skin's protective barrier and thus excessive water loss through the skin. Two is the reduction in the concentration of the skin's water-holding sugar and protein molecules, the complex polysaccharide content (Glycosaminoglycans and Proteoglycans) or, in a nutsheel: the carbohydrate molecular chains.
Many skin moisturizers and emollient products sold by cosmetic and skin care companies delay the healing of irritated and damaged skin and make the situation worse by inhibiting natural skin repair and increasing skin damage in ways similar to skin irritants. Occluding creams or moisturizing creams and dry skin products such as those containing petrolatum and lanolin to block water loss do not make things better either.
Skin-care products are only as good as what they contain and how their ingredients help your skin function better.
